Air Source Heat Pumps
Efficiently heat your buildings and provide hot water all year by harvesting energy from the air
RenEnergy are MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) approved installers for all air source heat pumps. We have installed over 200 heat pumps so we know the advantages and the pitfalls better than anyone. Here is some basic information about air source heat pumps and what they do.
Air Source Heat Pumps take heat from the air using an evaporator coil. The absorbed heat is extracted by the mains powered heat pump
Inside the heat pump a ‘heat pump cycle’ magnifies the heat taken from the air up to the temperature the system requires.
Traditionally heat pumps work most efficiently at low flow temperatures, and this makes them ideal for use with under floor heating- and this is always recommended if possible. When fitting heat pumps to existing properties you often have to replace radiators as well as the hot water tank to get the most out of the system. Recently, heat pumps that work at higher flow temperatures have become available, giving clients the option of working with existing gas/oil boilers or updating the entire system.
ASHP installation considerationsASHP are easier to integrate into existing buildings than ground source heat pumps
ASHP will need some clearance around them to ensure a good flow of air.
ASHP are cheaper to install than GSHP – because there’s no need for any excavation or buffer tank
ASHP are less efficient than GSHP
ASHP require less space than GSHP but they do currently require planning permission.
Sizing is VERY important with ASHP
Heat pump efficiencyThe performance of heat pumps is rated as a CoP or Coefficient of Performance. This measures how many units of heat are generated per unit of electricity used to run the system. The CoP is dependent on many things but the following is a typical for a well designed system.
Most ASHP have a CoP of around 3 on other words for every unit of electricity you put in you generate 4 units of heat
EconomicsThe payback time of an ASHP varies depending on the size of the system.
As of June 2011 it is expected that heat pump installations will be eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive. You can find out more about the RHI
