Feed-In Tariffs

The Feed-in Tariff (FiT) is a government backed scheme designed to encourage people to generate their own electricity using renewable sources such as wind or Solar Photovoltaic panels.

The FiT payments are guaranteed for 25 years and increase in line with inflation.

Changes to the FiT October 2011

On 31st October 2011 the Government have announced changes to the Feed-in Tariff rates, DECC are reducing the rate of the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) for PV installations as of 12th December 2011.

If you already have an eligible solar PV installation with a complete and valid Microgeneration Certification Scheme ("MCS") certificate, and your FIT licensee (an electricity supplier) has received your application form and MCS certificate, there will be no change. You will continue to be eligible to receive the current rate, for 25 years from the eligibility date of your installation.

If your PV system is installed with a complete and valid MCS Certificate and your FiT application has been received by your FiT licensee by the evening of 11th December you will still benefit from the higher rate for 25 years from the eligibility date of your installation.

Systems that are commissioned on or after 12th December 2011 will receive the higher rate until April 2012 when the rate will drop.

RenEnergy have the capacity to cope with a large number of installations between now and the December cut off date but we urge you to act now to avoid disappointment.

You can read more about the proposed changes on the DECC website or you can download the DECC FiT guides below.

How does the FiT work?

The government will pay you a Generation Tariff for each kWh or unit of electricity you generate regardless of whether you use it yourself or not.

The rate depends on the size of your system and whether you are putting the panels on a new or old building.

The government will also pay you an export tariff for any electricity you send back to the grid. This is because it is unlikely that you will use all the electricity you generate yourself so will need to send some back to the grid.

You will also be able to use any electricity that you generate for free which will help to reduce the cost of your electricity bill. The amount you save will be dependent on your lifestyle – small changes in your daily life will help to make big savings.

Should you require more electricity than your system is generating you will receive electricity from the grid as normal.
